DownEast Basics Presents Donation of Over $26,000 to
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Salt Lake City Affiliate
Donation Presented at Nonprofit’s January Board Meeting to
Support Regional Breast Cancer Education, Research and Prevention
SALT LAKE CITY (February 1, 2010) – DownEast Basics, a high-style, low-price fashion retailer that specializes in trendy fashions as well as modest clothing, officially presented a donation of over $26,000 to the Salt Lake City affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® at the organization’s board meeting on January 26.
DownEast’s donation is the result of a “Think Pink!” promotional event it ran in October 2009 in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the event, customers were able to purchase the brand’s layering tees and camisoles in pink for just $3.00 (regularly priced from $9.99 to $14.99) at any retail store location. DownEast contributed 100 percent of the purchase price to Komen for the Cure, in addition to 30 percent of the purchase price of all pink tees sold online.
“The SLC affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is thrilled to have received this very generous donation from DownEast Basics, 75 percent of which will stay here in the Wasatch Front community to fund lifesaving breast cancer awareness, screening and treatment programs. The remaining 25 percent will be sent to our headquarters in Dallas to help fund their cutting edge research grants program,” said Tracy Kelley, Manager, Komen SLC Affiliate.
This is the third consecutive year DownEast has contributed to the local branch of Komen for the Cure by raising funds through employee and customer matching donation events and promotional campaigns. To date, its 2009 “Think Pink!” event was the most successful.
Rich Israelsen, chief operating officer of DownEast Basics, presented the donation at the Salt Lake City affiliate board meeting and addressed why the 2009 campaign was both fun and inspirational in a brief speech:
“DownEast is honored to be involved with the local Komen branch. We’re inspired by many of our management and employees’ own family members who have been touched by this disease. While the donation drives we’ve had in years past had an impact, our ‘Think Pink!’ event added elements of fun, fashion and collaboration with our customers to support this important endeavor. Our customers were able to donate to a cause they believed in, and keep their pink purchase as a memento.”
DownEast’s donation will be used to help with research, education and support for women diagnosed with breast cancer. The retailer plans to continue to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month as an annual event.
